NEW OAMRS letter to Premier Ford May 28, 2020
NEW OAMRS letter to Deputy Minister, Helen Angus May 28, 2020
Dear (insert MPP name here):
My name is (insert name here) and I am a (insert specialty - Medical Radiation Technologist/Diagnostic Medical Sonographer/Radiation Therapist) working on the frontline at (insert name of facility/IHF here). Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs) and Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (DMSs) were not included yet again on the list of approved health professionals in the pandemic pay, according to communications the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences received from Deputy Minister Helen Angus.
MRTs and DMSs are frontline in the fight against COVID-19. We wear personal protective equipment all day, and by the nature of the close physical contact required to perform diagnostic testing and/or treatment we risk our lives every day going in to work. I urge you to correct this error and recognize MRTs and DMSs as the frontline workforce we are and include us in the temporary pandemic pay.
My colleagues and I provide vital diagnostic services such as x-rays, ultrasounds, CTs, MRIs, interventional, and radiation therapy procedures to thousands of Ontarians every day. (insert an example of your interactions with patients). These procedures are used to diagnose, monitor, and treat COVID-19 infected patients. Our amount of direct contact with suspected or infected patients on a daily basis is similar or higher than most of the other professionals listed, so we are very confused about how it is possible that we are not recognized. I continue, despite not being recognized, to go into work each day and put myself and my family’s lives at risk in the public interest.
That the government would not include us in pandemic-pay recognition is insulting. There is still time to correct this oversight! In the name of justice, give MRTs and DMSs the pandemic pay we deserve.
