Letter from the President & CEO

Congratulations – Sonography will soon be a Regulated Profession!

Dear esteemed Sonographers,

It is with great joy and pride that I can announce that Sonographers will soon be a regulated health profession! Yesterday, Dr. Eric Hoskins, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care in Ontario, introduced legislation and regulation changes that, when passed, means all Diagnostic Medical Sonographers will be recognized and regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO). Not only is this a great achievement for Sonographers as it provides legitimacy, credibility, and protection for the profession, but it will also increase the standard of care to patients in Ontario.

As the official voice and advocacy association for Sonographers, Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) has invested countless hours of work and resources over the last five years lobbying on your behalf to achieve this regulation. We traveled around the province to meet with both Sonographers and patients to understand their needs and concerns, and worked closely with provincial politicians and bureaucrats to plead our case and gain their support. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff, stakeholders, and supporters – Sonographers will join the 26 other health professions regulated under the RHPA.

As practicing Sonographers, you may be wondering – what does this mean for me? The regulation of Sonographers will have a positive impact on practitioners by:

  • Raising the profile and credibility of the profession
  • Legitimizing the educational qualifications and certification exam requirements for Sonographers
  • Providing title protection
  • Protecting the public from incompetent and unqualified practitioners entering the system
  • Creating accountabilities for Sonographers through the regulatory framework

Regulation of Sonographers is scheduled to begin in January 2018. Over the next few months we will be working collaboratively with the CMRTO to clarify this process and ensure your questions are answered. Our OAMRS team will be traveling to hospitals, universities, and clinics throughout Ontario in the coming months to celebrate this historical achievement, promote our profession and communicate what regulation means for Sonographers, and those you work with.

In the meantime, we hope you feel proud and take some time to celebrate the fact that your profession will soon be in the spotlight as the newest regulated healthcare profession in Ontario.  This is an exciting time to be a Sonographer!
